LIFE AGROintegra presents the final results obtained in fruit and vegetables:"Uniting efforts for the reduction of phytosanitary measures in horticultural and fruit trees".

Last June 20th, INTIA's experimental farm in Cadreita held the conference "Uniting efforts for the reduction of phytosanitary in horticultural and fruit trees", which presented the final results obtained in the LIFE AGROintegra Project in these crops and attended by some 40 people, mainly company technicians.

Pablo Díez, head of the Plant Production and Health Section of the Government of Navarre, opened the session by presenting various data on the implementation of the Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive in Navarre. He also raised some of the issues that are being addressed at European level such as neonicotinoids, glyphosate in France or the new requirements for Surfaces of Ecological Interest (SIE).

Delia Sola, head of the European Projects and Cooperation Department of the Government of Navarre, then presented the actions that have been carried out in the three years of the LIFE AGROintegra project and expressed special thanks for the interest and participation of the more than 170 professionals who have worked on the project.

The real scale demonstrations carried out in horticultural and fruit trees were then presented. Firstly, Daniel Peñalver, technician of Consebro, presented the results obtained in chard, borage, broccoli, thistle, spinach and green bean, applying GIP techniques such as the use of biopesticides, the technique of massive capture, biological control releases and flowering bands. He also presented the results obtained in the analysis of the socio-economic impact of the project. View presentation

Then Maite Llorens, AN Group technician, presented the demonstrations carried out by the group in collaboration with UCAN for fruit trees and industrial tomatoes. In this case, they highlighted biological control, sexual confusion and the use of bio-pesticides in fruit tree pest control (red mite, psila and carpocapsa). View presentation

Subsequently, Clara Viejo, UCAN presented the environmental impact data of all the demonstrations carried out in the project. They highlighted, as these alternative measures to chemical control, have reduced the number of phytosanitary products by 59% and the amount of active matter applied by 50%. These values, if extrapolated to Navarre as a whole, would reduce the use of insecticides by more than 70 tons of active matter. View presentation

In the second part of the day, Juan Antonio Lezáun INTIA technician, reviewed all the alternative control measures available before the application of phytosanitary products. He explained how each one of them has been used in the experimentation developed in the project and highlighted the importance of using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) criteria, giving greater importance to preventive measures to achieve good pest and disease control. Ricardo Biurrun, INTIA technician, presented the new Warning and Alert Station (http://estacionavisos.agrointegra.intiasa.es/ai/accesoVisor.do). This new station not only provides access to data on the traps of the collaborative network of different pests and diseases, but also provides models of diseases and pests, tables of ecophysiology, risk alerts and treatments, etc. He also referred to the importance of using hedges and flowering bands around crops to encourage the presence of auxiliaries, balancing pest levels. Next, Elisa Viñuela, Professor of Entomology at the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), presented the work being done to determine the effects of phytosanitary measures on auxiliary fauna. In their essays, they use procedures established by the International Organization for Biological Struggle-OILB (www.unipa.it/iobc/ and www.iobc-wprs.org). These studies evaluate the lethal effects (mortality) and the sublethal effects (reduction of fertility, disorientation, etc.) of phytosanitary measures on different insect species on four species per crop. They are initially evaluated in the laboratory and, based on the results, transferred to semi-field and field conditions. View presentation

The last paper was presented by Natividad Luqui de Gelagri. In his presentation, he made it clear that the sector is betting more and more strongly on this type of management, with reductions in the use of phytosanitary products to control pests and diseases in crops. Proof of this is its line VECONATUR (Veguras Congeladas Naturales), which guarantees the non-use of fungicides and insecticides in crops. View presentation

The day ended with a round table with all the speakers in which Delia Sola moderated the different questions posed by all attendees.
